Aaron Becker - On and Off the Wheel
Aaron Becker - On and Off the Wheel
The Potters’ Studio presents a:
TWO-DAY WORKSHOP
with Aaron Becker
Saturday and Sunday, February 8–9, 2020 10am–4:30pm
On and Off the Wheel
This two-day, hands-on workshop is designed to teach you how to loosen up a bit in the studio and allow your wildest visions to come to life! Learn how to combine wheel-thrown forms and slab-built parts. We’ll discuss how to push the design of an object to its limit and how to then refine the form to create an articulate and intellectually stimulating object. By allowing our intuition to guide and inform our decisions, we’ll construct unique objects (yunomi, mugs, jars, vases) rooted in a new vision for our current domestic reality. Basic hand-building and/or throwing skills are required.
The Opening Reception for “The Poetry of Pottery” at Trax Gallery is Saturday, February 8 from 5–7pm. The exhibition will include work by Aaron Becker, Robert Brady and Wayne Branum. Aaron will talk about his work and do a spoken word performance at 6:15pm.
“Pairing wheel-thrown domestic pots with sculptural objects about idealized interiors, I try to distort scale and and pull the viewer into the reality of an “imagined space”. Primarily a potter, I often daydream about the domesticated pot and our current material culture and how we select objects to fill our spaces. My current ceramic work serves as a visual metaphor of my mental space and the challenges we face in creating new utilitarian objects. I use the vessel to bring the viewer into my thought process around internal energy holding physical form of an imagined interior. My hope is to build analogies between people, spaces and the objects we fill them with.”
Aaron Becker is a studio member and instructor at Lillstreet Art Center in Chicago, Illinois. He is constantly trying to improve and refine both his craft of teaching and his craft of making. He was raised on pots in and around Minneapolis, Minnesota and received his BFA from The University of Minnesota. He has held many different clay-focused jobs that have provided him with a unique and diverse perspective on clay and how it fits into our current society.
