Above and Below the Surface: Surface Treatments and Imagery to Create Visually Dynamic Pots

During this two-day hands-on workshop, Diana will cover how to use multiple techniques, which when used together, create rich and graphically dynamic surfaces. Diana will show how she uses stencil resists with multiple substrates to create negative, positive, and relief images. She will also share how she creates reusable templates from her original drawings to use both as an image placement and composition tool. We will explore using slips, underglazes, terra sigillatas harvested from wild clay and glaze to create rich, painterly and layered effects that are both visually luscious and tactile to the touch. Diana will share her signature etching technique for creating expressive line-work in clay and will show us how to make carved bisque molds to add yet another textural dimension to pots. This workshop is designed for both wheel-throwers and hand-builders with at least some experience working with clay.

Diana Fayt is a modern-day scrimshaw artist whose chosen medium is clay rather than whalebone. Drawing on her background as a painter, sculptor, printmaker and clayer, her surfaces are alive with strange and exotic stories, part folklore and part personal narrative. Fayt’s work can be found in a myriad of public and private art collections both in the United States and abroad. She has been featured on the cover of Ceramics Monthly as well as in numerous international and American Publications, such as The Journal of Australian Ceramics, American Craft and Sunset Magazine. Her roster of clients include Heath Ceramics, Anthropologie and Terrain. A graduate of California College of the Arts, Diana currently lives and works in Portland, Oregon.
