Anyone Can Center!
Back at The Potters’ Studio by popular demand! Michael Berkley has been teaching and displaying his work for over 40 years and is known for being a natural teacher with the ability to reach people at all levels of skill. Are you new to throwing or having problems with centering? In this one-day workshop, learn to center a three-pound piece of clay in less than 15 seconds. There are many ways to center but on close inspection they all filter down to just a few principles…support, pressure, steady hands and perseverance. Michael’s technique works for everyone but especially well for people who feel they do not have a lot of strength. The basic steps of centering, opening, creating the vessel floor, bringing up the walls and evening out the walls will all be covered. Michael will work on a 1:1 basis with workshop participants. All skill levels welcome.
Michael served as Resident Artist and instructor at the University of Oregon and was an instructor at Walnut Creek Civic Arts for 18 years teaching raku-firing, pit-firing, beginning, intermediate and advanced ceramics. He also taught classes at The Potters’ Studio in years past. Michael has a strong interest in Archeology and Ancient Sumer which started early in his career while attending UW and continues to influence his work today. He has won numerous awards for his ceramic art and design.
