SODA FIRING WORKSHOPS

The Potters’ Studio has an active and enthusiastic soda firing community and we offer workshops both in-house and with visiting artists from around the country throughout the year.

Our downdraft kiln, “Soda Pop,” was built by Ted Neal and has a capacity of 16 cubic feet.

We welcome Potters’ Studio Members and Students to workshops and also offer a limited number of slots to potters in the broader community who have a grasp of the basics of gas reduction firing.

Thanks to generous donors, we are able to offer a limited number of soda firing scholarships each year — email scholarship@berkeleypottersstudio.org for information.

Soda Firing Workshop

with Josie Rovegno

November 2024

Join us for an introductory workshop offering hands-on training in the fundamentals of soda firing with The Potters’ Studio soda kiln. Josie will train you in safety and care of the kiln and equipment and will guide you in preparing and glazing your bisqueware, making wadding and cone packs, and loading and firing. Each participant will get 1 cubic foot of firing space.

This workshop is optimized for pieces with flashing slips, with the goal of bringing out depth of color in the clays and slips. The firing will be at cone 9/10 with sprayed soda and an oxidation strike at the end.

Limited to 12 participants

COST: $425 (PS Members & PS Students: $375)
